DIY Tips For Putting Up Shelving
Author: Mark Usher | Date: 25 January 2010 17h50
When wanting to put a shelf you will need the following equipment:
-
Power drill
-
The correct size drill bit
-
Wall plugs with screws
-
Screw drivers
-
Brackets (if not supplied with shelf)
-
Spirit level
-
Self tapping wood screws
Start off by selecting a suitable hight for the shelf.
Mark the shelf by using a pencil and make sure it is level by using the spirit level. Then mark the holes for the brackets using your pencil.
Using your wall plug as a guide on the drill bit mark off the correct depth with a piece of tape. Holding the drill straight start drilling the holes but be careful not to let the drill move to much as this might make the hole bigger than the wall plugs.
Once you have drilled the holes, insert the wall plugs into the holes, until they are flush with the wall. Place the holes of the brackets over the hole in the wall, and using your screw driver screw the top screw in first. This will help stabilize the bracket for you to screw in the other screws.
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE SCREWS AS THE TIPS CAN SNAP.
Once you have screwed in all the screws you can place the shelf on the brackets. Using the self tapping wood screws secure the shelf, being careful not to over tighten the screws as they can strip the holes and not hold the shelf to the brackets.
Congratulations - You now have a new shelf!
